Welcome to the NGO update for 6 July 2009.

Influenza A (H1N1) Swine Flu - The latest updates can be found on the Ministry of Health website: www.moh.govt.nz/moh.nsf/indexmh/influenza-a-h1n1-news-media

Preparing your business to respond to a pandemic

You will be aware that the numbers of Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) cases in New Zealand are increasing. The Ministry of Health advises that this trend is likely to continue over the coming weeks and months.
Obviously, a pandemic of this kind or any similar type of crisis will affect your business, your staff and customers. Just how much you are affected will depend on the severity of the crisis and how well prepared you are.

Planning to see your business through a pandemic is important. This can be done by planning the steps your business will take before, during and after a pandemic. There is no one, single response you can plan for. You and your staff need to respond flexibly depending on the situation. Keeping your plan updated will also be useful in the event of another type of crisis occurring.

Information on the Department of Labour website, www.dol.govt.nz , that could help you with your planning includes:

  • Commonly asked questions and answers for employers about potential employment issues that could arise during a pandemic.
  • Information to assist with business continuity planning.
  • Workplace health and safety guidance, including infection control advice relevant to the workplace.
  • Advice on the use of personal protective equipment in the workplace.
  • Practical scenarios that illustrate the different measures businesses can take to protect themselves.
Keep informed of developments and update your plans, and your employees accordingly. In addition to the existing business networks and organisations you belong to, the Department of Labour, Ministry of Economic Development and Ministry of Health websites provide ongoing sources of information on the implications of a pandemic for workplaces, businesses, and public health. Visit www.dol.govt.nz , www.med.govt.nz , or www.moh.govt.nz to find out more.

Applications to take part in a Pacific region development conference in March 2010 close on 17 July

Applications to take part in a Pacific region development conference in March 2010 are being sought from people who are emerging as the next generation of leaders in New Zealand. Typically they will be in positions of responsibility and in their 30s.

The Emerging Pacific Leaders' Dialogue 2010 (EPLD 2010) is scheduled to take place 11-23 March 2010. It is an important regional leadership development initiative for emerging leaders in NZ, Australia and across the Pacific and follows on the success of a similar Dialogue held in 2006. The 120 participants will be drawn from business, government, trade unions and the community service sector including educational institutions and NGOs in more than 20 Pacific region countries/territories.

The Opening Plenary sessions of EPLD 2010 will take place in Samoa and the Closing Plenary sessions will be held in Tonga - each over two days. For the middle week participants will be assigned to one of ten intellectually challenging study tour programmes. Each study tour group will visit a separate Pacific region location, focusing on the challenges being faced by the community and the leadership being shown and the initiatives being taken in response. One study tour will be coming to NZ, another to Australia, and the remaining eight to other Pacific countries. HRH The Princess Royal (Princess Anne) is expected to take part on the Closing Plenary.

The theme of EPLD 2010 is "Navigating our Future Together” and all aspects of the conference will focus on the significance of leadership in the context of relevant sub-themes including sustainable economic growth; regional cooperation and infrastructure; good governance; security, stability and strengthening communities; and environment, industry, education and health.

Costs - All participation costs apart from leave to attend will be met by the organisers.
How to Apply - New Zealand has been allocated 12 places. The aim is to select a good cross section of emerging New Zealand leaders from a variety of backgrounds. It is open to all New Zealanders and is not restricted to those of Pasifika or Maori ethnicity.

Applications close on Friday 17 July and short-listed applicants will be interviewed for final selection.

Applications can be made via an on line application process available on the EPLD web site at www.epld2.com. For further information please contact Miles Middlemass on (04) 479 2683

National Maori Cancer Forum, 12–14 August, Rotorua

When cancer rates for Maori men are 55.6% higher than non-Maori and 83.5% higher for Maori women than non-Maori the announcement of a Maori Cancer Forum is both critical and opportune. You can help by ensuring your colleagues are aware of the forum and given an opportunity to attend.

To be held from 12–14 August in Rotorua, home of Te Arawa, the forum will provide the platform for the exposition of indigenous research, medicine, services and experiences from around the world. Bringing together people from all perspectives of the cancer journey to gain knowledge, skills and expertise to ensure excellence in cancer service and to reduce barriers to access of services for Maori and whanau affected by cancer, the speaker line-up includes some of the world’s leading indigenous medical specialists.

International speakers include Dr Felicia Hodge of Center for American Indian/Indigenous Research and Education; Dr Gail Garvey and Dr Patricia Valery of Indigenous Research Programme, Queensland Institute of Medical Research and Matthew Town of Northwest Tribal Cancer Project, Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board.

Registrations are now open, and forum details are available at www.maoricancer.co.nz.

Personal Advocacy Trust

The Personal Advocacy Trust finds advocates/friends for people with an intellectual disability after their parents have died. This not only provides great relationships but it also intervenes if there are areas of the person's life which are not as good as they should be – either because of abuse or more often just not being aware of what is possible. Please feel free to contact them on patrust@paradise.net.nz or look at their new web site - www.huttcity.com/patrust .
